Successful Exit: Shimadzu Corporation acquires majority stake in deep-tech startup Plasmion
Japanese provider of analytical instruments acquires 75% of shares; founders remain significantly invested
Munich, 29 April 2026 – The Augsburg-based deep-tech startup Plasmion has reached a major milestone in its growth with the investment by Shimadzu Corporation: the Japanese manufacturer of analytical instruments is acquiring a 75% stake, bringing not only capital but also global sales strength and industrial scaling expertise. BayBG invested in Plasmion in 2019 alongside High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and has supported the company’s development throughout its growth journey.
At the core of the transaction is Plasmion’s patented SICRIT® (Soft Ionization by Chemical Reaction In Transfer) technology, an innovative ion source for mass spectrometers. It enables highly sensitive, real-time analysis of substances directly from ambient air—without complex sample preparation. The technology is already in use in analytical laboratories, including applications in the medical, pharmaceutical, and food industries.
With Shimadzu, Plasmion gains a global leader in analytical measurement and diagnostic systems, particularly in the fields of mass spectrometry, chromatography, and medical technology. The existing collaboration between the two companies, ongoing since 2019, is now being strategically expanded: SICRIT is set to be integrated into Shimadzu’s established platforms, a move expected to significantly accelerate market adoption.
“The combination of Plasmion’s technology and Shimadzu’s global reach creates ideal conditions for the next phase of growth,” says Andreas Heubl, Senior Investment Manager at BayBG Venture Capital. “We wish Dr. Thomas Wolf, Dr. Jan-Christoph Wolf, and their team continued success and all the best.”
